Lowering Language Barriers Training 13th June

5 Jun

As you know, many residents, especially those whose first language is not English, find it difficult to understand the recent changes in benefits, contracts, forms, regulations, legal terms and maintenance requirements.

This one day training will help staff adapt their language for residents whose first language is not English. It focuses on how to communicate effectively with people who are not fluent in English, but is also relevant if you work with clients with low literacy, the elderly or people with learning difficutlies.

Date:  13th June 2013

Venue:  St Paul’s Hammersmith

Cost:  £155 / £130

The course, Lowering Language Barriers in Housing, is a highly practical course for staff with frontline roles. It will benefit anyone who works in housing, especially those who deal with residents. Benefits include:

* Better customer service – more responsive to tenants’ diverse language needs.
* Ensure equal access to information and services.
* Support tenant involvement in decision-making.
* More cost-effective use of time as misunderstandings are reduced.
* Reduce translating and interpreting costs.

Public engagement event 5th June at Guy’s Hospital – Organ Donor Register

4 Jun

Via BME Health Forum

The Donation, Transplantation and Ethnicity (DonaTE) Programme is holding a public engagement event 5 June at Guy’s Hospital (SE1, London). The event will be on designing successful campaigns and interventions to promote more people from black and minority ethnic groups to sign-up to the Organ Donor Register.

We hope to develop some concrete recommendations for future health campaigns that we can feedback to other researchers, practitioners and NHS Blood and Transplant. The event would be of interest to people who want more information about organ donation, to influence policy/practice, or who are interested in making successful public awareness campaigns generally.

Participants don’t need any experience with organ donation/transplantation, just a desire to contribute to the discussion. And, there will be cake!
I’ve included and flyer and would appreciate if you could pass it along to your networks. Please get in touch for more information or booking a place (Jessica.Sims@kcl.ac.uk)

10th London Schools and the Black Child Conference 1st June

21 May

Back by popular demand…

“Black Children & Education: After Gove, where next?”

The LSBC awards showcase year on year the most academically gifted Black children. With the right support and opportunities our children can break down the stereotypes and rank amongst the very best in the country.

But there is a lot more to do.  The education system is undergoing some fundamental changes and we need to ensure that Black children are not left behind. Many of the initiatives that propelled our children into higher levels of achievement have borne the brutal brunt of public sector cuts. This is against a backdrop of attempts to remove key Black British figures from history lessons; soaring exclusions of young black boys; and an increasingly marketised further and higher education system that may see underprivileged black children priced out.

As in previous years the event will include an array of experienced speakers and bring together parents, children, teachers and community educators. The discussion will focus on what we can do to challenge the discrimination that our children face and ensure that they get the very best from their education.

Places are extremely limited therefore registration is essential. To register for the event through eventbrite please click on the following link http://lsbc.eventbrite.com/ .
